In the U.S. there is a lot of legal red tape and many medical hoops to jump through before a person can legally change their gender.
Now in Argentina, thanks to an unprecedented new law, adults seeking sex-change surgery or hormone therapy can get their expenses covered by private or public health plans without needing the go-ahead from a doctor or judge.
A Stanford University medical anthropologist said:
"That's unheard of. There's a whole set of medical criteria that people have to meet to change their gender in the U.S., and meanwhile this gives the individual an extraordinary amount of authority for how they want to live. It's really incredible."
Even children can change their genders with approval from their legal guardian. Which is crazy forward of Argentina.
Maybe the U.S. could take their cues from them!
It's amazing that a government is willing to recognize a person's gender identity based on their own word and not force them to prove themselves to doctors or judges.
They are who they are! They were born that way!
