LOLz, they even called it the "best estimate yet," which sounds like it's good news!
Oh, and that 4,700 are just the really nasty ones: there are plus or minus 1,500 space rocks, that are larger than 330 feet wide and in orbits that occasionally bring them close enough to Earth to 'pose a concern.'
The new study was based on observations from NASA's Wide-field Infrared Survey Explorer (WISE), which is an advanced infrared space telescope.
Not all is fire and death, as this scientist explains:
"Because they will tend to make more close approaches to Earth, these targets can provide the best opportunities for the next generation of human and robotic exploration."
Soooooooo if they don't hit us, we might as well study them! We can see that!
As long as there's a silver lining to our panic! Ha!
