This seems like something that should have been made YEARS ago!
While we think that the strive to reverse blindness will always trump other research in this field, we're shocked that intermediate devices haven't been more popular.
These glasses are meant for those with moderate visual impairment — those who have difficulty perceiving the full extent of their surroundings — so they can avoid bumping into things… and potentially suffering major injuries because of it.
Here's what one of the scientists at UCM3 said:
“This device is aimed at people who would bump into everything that they fail to see because of their loss of visual field, caused by glaucoma, retinal pathologies, etc."
Here's the incredibly detailed explanation of the device:
'The prototype was developed using an HMD device (Head Mounted Display), a virtual reality helmet that includes two cameras to which a small computer has been attached; the computer processes all of the images that it receives. Then, thanks to an algorithm that the researchers have developed, the system determines the distance and outline of the objects and communicates the information to the user in real time using two micro screens, highlighting the silhouette of the elements in the scene and varying the colors according to their distance.'
So. Freaking. Cool.
Technology is NUTS you guys!
We're so happy that we're living in this day and age — and you should be too!
Science! Science! Science!
