Looks like bed bugs won't be joining frats any time soon!
So, um, bed bugs are absolutely disgusting. They survive mainly on human blood, and are EVERYWHERE.
If you've been slammin' back the Mississippi Dunce Caps, though, you might be in the clear!
And it's a direct correlation, too — the higher the BAC, the less they eat!
Here's what the author of the dissertation said:
"[Bed bugs] need a blood meal to grow and to molt and to reproduce. And one of their main hosts are humans, and we consume a lot of stuff. Alcohol was one of the easier ones to start with."
Here's how he did it:
First he went to the store and bought some 'quila (short for Tequila). He then drank it. Then he put himself in a vat of the bugs.
He brewed up 200 proof ethanol/expired blood cocktails until he had BACs of 0.010, 0.025, 0.050 and 0.100 (0.08 is the legal limit for driving). There was also a sample that contained no alcohol.
Then he grabbed 20 adult bed bugs for each blood sample, weighed them, fed them their respective samples, and weighed them again.
He repeated the experiment six times!
The one that ate the control sample doubled it's weight, and then laid 44 eggs. The other ones increased by 60% and lower, depending on the level of BAC. The highest BAC laid just 12 eggs!
Of course, this doesn't mean you should be gettin' mad tipsy every night just to ward them off — you should probably be sleeping somewhere less disgusting.
And entomologist said this:
"I don't know what sort of implications it has ultimately, because unfortunately they still produce enough eggs to cause an infestation. So while they feed less, still, we're not going to experience less of a problem. But it's very interesting to know."
Have U ever dealt with bed bugs??
