Olympic Ban: McDonald's And Coke??

Olympics McD

Honestly, we've always wondered why McDonald's and Coke were allowed to be sponsors of major competition based on being in top physical form.

Because as we all know, McDonald's and sugary drinks do NOT help you stay in shape!

Well, the London Assembly must be wondering the same thing, because they're calling for a ban.

They're running out of time before the 2012 games, though, but the powerful elected body passed a motion urging the International Olympic Committee to adopt strict sponsorship criteria in a bid to outlaw advertising of products linked to child obesity.

Here's what the proposal motion had to say:

“London won the right to host the 2012 Games with the promise to deliver a legacy of more active, healthier children across the world. Yet the same International Olympic Committee that awarded the games to London persists in maintaining sponsorship deals with the purveyors of high calorie junk that contributes to the threat of an obesity epidemic.”

The biggest issue here is money, of course.

Without McDonald's and Coke, the games would be broke. They would need healthier organizations to step up.

Seriously, they make up 40% of the revenue for the games.

Plus there's a loooooong history: Coca-Cola has sponsored every Olympic Games since 1928 and McDonald’s has been with them since the Montreal Olympics in 1976.

Here's what McDonalds has to say:

“Ultimately it’s up to individuals to make the right food, drink, and activity choices for themselves."

That isn't a false statement, but we're mostly worried about the kids making the connection between fast food and the Olympics.

What do U guys think? Should they get the boot?

Don't U think it's time for the Olympics to take the theatrics down a notch anyway — cut the spectacle and focus on the sport??
