Dr. Oliver Zong, a podiatrist and cosmetic surgeon has found that people are increasingly worried about "toe-besity" as he calls it.
Apparently, he's noticed an increase in people looking not only to shorten certain toes, but also to have the fat sucked out.
A patient of Zong's had been ashamed of their fat big toe for years, saying:
"I always had issues with it. It was one of those things that you're just not comfortable with and try to hide it."
These surgeries are cosmetic and not covered by insurance and can cost upwards of $2,500!
Many surgeons say the risk of performing surgery when it's not necessary isn't worth risking your foot.
Zong defends himself, saying:
"I think it's the same as if you would ask for any kind of cosmetic surgery. They're very embarrassed by the situation and afterward, they gain self-esteem and feel more confident. Some people have said they're so embarrassed that their boyfriends have never seen their feet."
We guess as long as it's making people feel better about themselves then it's a good thing.
It is flip-flop season!
