This is amazinggggg!
Researchers at Brigham and Women’s Hospital in Boston found that two men no longer have detectable HIV in their blood cells after bone marrow transplants!
The men were on anti-retroviral therapy, and now they might be cured of HIV.
It seems weird even typing that but it could be true.
One of the researchers said:
"We expected HIV to vanish from the patients’ plasma, but it is surprising that we can’t find any traces of HIV in their cells. It suggests that under the cover of anti-retroviral therapy, the cells that repopulated the patient’s immune system appear to be protected from becoming re-infected with HIV."
More studies need to be conducted on these two men to make sure they are completely cured of HIV.
They remain on anti-retroviral medications for the time being.
So we've got bone marrow transplants and a prevention pill on the way!
Right now, bone marrow transplants are too costly and dangerous for all HIV patients to undergo but it's still a great step in the right direction.
Way to go, doctors!
