Apparently, NBC had been losing money every two years that it was airing the Olympics.
Not this year — they plan to break even, and maybe… just maybe… they'll even make a little money.
Probably from all of the horrible tape delays and forcing things into prime time.
Anyway, here's what Steve Burke of NBCUniversal said:
“We are way ahead of where we thought we would be. Given the trends, we stand to make money on future Olympics….All of the numbers are significantly better than we projected in our deal. Every 2 years NBCU was losing a lot of money on the Olympics.”
So what's different?
“Really, a ratings success pretty much across the board. For the first time we have a strategy that embraces broadcast, digital, and cable. It’s clearly something that’s going to benefit our company very broadly….Long term we’re delighted to have the asset.”
"All the while we get to ruin the Olympic coverage for everyone. We've never been able to spoil so many events in such little time before," he probably wanted to add.
This is frustrating to hear because of how unhappy the viewers are with what they're doing. Plus, like we said, the only reason why they're doing better at all is for two reasons:
1. They tape delay things into prime time.
2. THE NATION CAN'T WATCH IT ANYWHERE ELSE.
It's awful to see them so smug about it.
Plus, now that they're making money, there's no WAY they're going to change how they cover it to make their viewers happy!
