So there's this water polo ref, right?
He blew a call, and it happened to be a game-deciding one, so he got fired.
While that's awful, especially for the losing team (Spain), he IS doing one thing right: owning up to his mistake, and apologizing.
His name is Boris Margeta, and he was effectively banned from officiating any more 2012 Olympic matches because he threw out a goal that should have counted in Spain's match against Croatia.
Here's what he said:
"It was very bad. After I saw the replay I knew I made a mistake. My apologies to Spain's team."
Luckily, Spain's still in the running to medal as they finished 3rd in bracket play, which landed them a spot in the quarterfinals. Though, Croatia went on to become the top in their bracket!
Officiating the Olympics has GOT to be just as exciting as getting to go for other reasons, from an official's point of view. Don't blow it!
In the end, you know what they say: Water Yolo!
