Olympian Oscar Pistorius is known as a "blade runner."
It's not a reference to the old Harrison Ford sci-fi film, but the fact that he runs on two prosthetic blades.
He actually made it all the way to the London 2012 Olympics. Not the Paralympics, the regular Games!
He was so inspiring that the Boston Marathon has decided to allow runners with prosthetic blades to compete, saying:
"At the BAA, we adhere to the rules of USA Track & Field and the [International Association of Athletics Federations] concerning athletes competing with a prosthesis. If those organizations don't find that [Oscar Pistorius's] ‘blades' afford any competitive advantage — as they have indeed found — we will be well-pleased to adhere to their findings."
There apparently aren't very many amputees looking to run the marathon but after Oscar's inspiring Olympics run, they expect more blade runners to show up.
We wonder how long until the paralympics are crushing the regular Olympics' records?
Anyway we're glad the Boston Marathon has such an open mind. Way to be progressive!
