While this is better than the projected $200m dollar loss (how can you be that far off, though), breaking even isn't that much better.
Luckily, NBC isn't really giving their coverage any credit (probably because it was awful) — instead, they're saying that strong performances at the London Olympics by U.S. teams and athletes led to strong ratings.
Advertising sales topped $1B, up 50% compared to the 2008 Olympics in Beijing.
Mix that with the fact that 219.4M American viewers tuned in (because they literally had nowhere else to tune in to watch), and you have the most-watched TV event ever in the US.
We'd like to know how they plan to turn a profit in the next few games, but we won't be holding our breath if they continue their tape delaying and match spoiling trends.
Honestly — just think of how many more people past the 219.4m would have tuned in if some hadn't been spoiled!
