This is a bummer for all those potheads out there — smokin' weed might be tied to testicular cancer!
Even worse news is that the connection might start when you're young… which is when most pot smokers start!
A new study is claiming that those who had smoked pot were twice as likely to have been diagnosed with testicular germ cell tumors, the most common form of testicular cancer in men younger than 35. This study had 455 men.
Unfortunately, this is mostly based on interviews, rather than trying to figure out how or why or if there's something in addition to the pot that makes them more susceptible!
This is what they're guessing, according to a scientist involved:
"We know testosterone is an important regulator of testes development and function. It may be that marijuana use disrupts this regulation in a way that makes the testes much more vulnerable to cancer."
It would disrupt it by THC (which is the fun part of weed) lowering levels of circulating hormones.
Again, they might be ignoring other important factors, like men who use marijuana are more likely to drink and use other drugs.
There isn't a huge amount of evidence yet, but it IS worth noting — especially if you're on the fence about starting up.
Might just be easier to avoid it altogether!
