Remember all that arctic ice loss we've been talking about??
It could spell an intense winter for us!
Here's what scientists are saying:
“It’s probably going to be a very interesting winter. It didn’t just touch the record, it really drove right through it. I would say it’s been a few thousand years since we’ve seen the Arctic this open. [The] tendency for weather to hang around longer is going to favor extreme weather conditions that are related to persistent weather patterns."
Less ice would mean that not as much sun energy is being shot back into space with reflections — and that heating up impact the jet stream. Arctic warming can cause the jet stream to slow down and become more amplified in a north-south direction, and lead to more intense and extreme weather events for the U.S. and Europe.
