Earth Running Out Of Plants??

Plant Room

According to satellite data, the earth produces 53.6 petagrams of plants a year. No, a petagram isn't a letter from Josh Hutcherson, it's about 2.2 trillion lbs.

Of that, humans use about 40%, or about 24 billion tons!

That seems like a lot of salad, but it might not be enough!

According to the College of Forestry and Conservation's Steven Running, we can't access much more than we already are.

The problem is there just isn't very much room left to grow extra crops!

Unfortunately, our demand is still growing every day as corporations continue to consume mass quantities of vegetation!

So what can we do about it? Running says:

"Endless economic growth and endless consumptive growth of the planet just can't happen. And that the sooner we start getting realistic expectations for the future, the better we can manage ourselves to effectively use the planetary resources in a sustainable way."

Yeah, remember that whole "Reduce, Reuse, Recycle" thing? It's time to start focusing on the one no one likes to talk about- reducing!

Because let's face it. We can be happy with a little less stuff, but not one fewer planet!
