Argo? What's Argo?
A new Ben Affleck movie?? That's cool and all, but we're more interested in hearing him talk about the Congo for right now (we'll see the flick after!)!
This is nothing new for Ben, who has been in love with the Congo and focused on the cause for years, saying this about the gender issues and the loss of life:
"When I went I found places where there was complete impunity …places where two out of three women had been raped…the gender-based statistics moved me as a husband and as a father."
He then went on to speak about his Eastern Congo Initiative (ECI), and the mission to raise awareness and generate funding for community based aid groups in Congo.
One of the best ideas they've had, though, is on sustainable aid — local cocoa farmers in the Congo were connected with chocolate makers across the globe:
"It isn't really aid. This is the free market. We hooked up them up with Theo chocolate, who does a great job and we now have our first Congo bar. It's not aid, it's not giving somebody money, it's we're going to get you to a place where you can manufacture on the open market so that you can sell your market…so you have an ongoing business where people can make money through their own work."
Such amazing — and rewarding — work, Ben. We can only hope that the impact you have, and those working with you, will be huge!!
Oh, and we guess we'll go see Argo.
