Are you afraid of Halloween?
You know, not because of ghosts or anything… but keeping up with your fitness amongst all the treats?? There's no need to worry! One of our fave contributors, Justin Janoska, has compiled a list of ways to avoid succumbing to Halloween!
With the holiday season soon approaching, a cascade of food in near sight and sub-optimal eating habits are likely to take place. And the first stop is Halloween. There’s nothing wrong with enjoying yourself, because everyone should, but with Halloween in 2 days, some of you may be wondering, “How am I going to indulge without killing my figure?” Well, there’s a way to reduce the damage and I’m here to share with you how I approach this in my Halloween Fitness Survival Guide. This isn’t intended to Halloween-proof your waist, but if use these tips, you can save yourself from a major single day calorie overload that’s guaranteed to set you back in your fat loss goals.
Tip #1 - Despite Halloween taking place mid-week, I suspect a number of you will still be out attending parties. If you are, take some precautionary measures and cut out the sugar-laden drinks and Halloween punch. Make your own cocktails with the liquor of your choice, but opt for low/calorie free mixers like mineral water, vitamin water, diet sodas and the low-calorie versions of energy drinks, if necessary. If you choose to go the beer route, stick with any light beer (i.e. Amstel Light, Coors Light, Beck’s Premier Light, etc. - the latter containing 64 calories per bottle). You will save a huge amount of calories this way.
Tip #2 - Since you probably will be going to work the next day, it’s critical to drink water throughout the night, as well as a few glasses after the party to dilute the alcohol. Dehydration is linked to hangovers. So, even though you may already know this, just don’t forget. In fact, a 750 ml bottle of sparkling water has always been my go-to choice before bed and it’s done wonders for me the next morning.
Tip #3 - When I know I will be off-course for the day, I make sure I hit the gym and hit it hard. This means weight training and cardio after, or perhaps just a brutal interval workout (see my video on Interval Training to get an idea) to give myself some “room to spare” for extra calories I may consume. For reassurance, I workout the next day as well. This approach has never failed me.
Tip #4 - Drink a lot of water throughout the day. Not only will it fill you up and create less of a chance for you to over consume, drinking water actually burns calories! But it must be ice-cold water. How much you might be asking? We’re talking 33 calories per 1 liter. Not bad for just drinking water, right?
Tip #5 - Give your trick-or-treaters something you don’t like. Not even a tiny bit. That way you will win in the face of candy you detest. But if you love everything, then hand out something like…potatoes. Seriously, I do, but just as a joke, yet they are always gone!
Tip #6 - Try not to binge on candy. Spread out your indulgences throughout the night and save your body from the surge of blood sugar. Eat small or fun size versions of your favorite candy. Even better - go for dark chocolate since it contains large amounts of potassium, magnesium and iron, decreases blood pressure and doesn’t raise blood sugar levels as sharply as other candies.
