That is, of course, if you're not suuuuuper into horror movies and are already desensitized!
It's true: a new study shows that you can burn around 200 calories just by watching a horror movie — unless you're eating popcorn and candy and drinking tons of soft-drinks too! LOLz!
Just one 90-minute horror movie can burn about 113 calories, which is like going for a walk, or subtracting a candy-bar from your gut. As it turns out, if you want to burn more than that, just pop in The Shining — it had the average viewer using up a whopping 184 calories!
That's AVERAGE! Some people burned more! Jaws took came in at #2, with an average 161 calories, and then The Exorcist with 158 calories.
Here's what researchers said happened:
"Each of the ten films tested set pulses racing, sparking an increase in the heart rate of the case studies. As the pulse quickens and blood pumps around the body faster, the body experiences a surge in adrenaline. It is this release of fast acting adrenaline, produced during short bursts of intense stress (or in this case, brought on by fear), which is known to lower the appetite, increase the Basal Metabolic Rate and ultimately burn a higher level of calories."
We'd like to see the scope of this experiment broadened — more movies, more people. We're sure there are some sleeper hits that would be INTENSE work outs! Plus, we're wondering about slasher vs. psychological.
Also, what about going to haunted houses?? Ha!
