Is Red Wine Only Healthy For Obese Women?

This would be kind of a bummer for average and below-average weight ladies out there: it's looking like red wine is only really healthy for the obese. That doesn't mean that red wine is bad for you, however!

Just neutral.

What sucks is that this goes against a lot of what we've heard. We've heard that it's great for mobility, your brain, and cancer prevention. Basically, Resveratrol, the red wine component shown to be helpful in improving metabolic function in obese or diabetic people, has no discernible effect on healthy women who are not obese. Let's hope those antioxidants still work!

Here's what they found:

'In a small 12-week randomized, double-blinded trial, researchers gave 29 normal weight postmenopausal women either 75 milligrams a day of resveratrol or a placebo, testing their metabolic function at the start and end of the study. Blood concentrations of resveratrol increased in the group given the supplements, but the scientists found no difference between them and those given the placebo in body composition, resting metabolic rate or glucose tolerance (a test for insulin resistance and diabetes).'

Not only that, but blood pressure, heart rate, C-reactive protein levels, LDL, HDL and total cholesterol were unaffected by resveratrol. For better OR worse.

We say don't stop drinking red wine just yet, even if you're not obese. This is one study and it isn't hurting.

Hope for the best! Ha!
