If you want to update an outdated snack (when was the last time you had Cracker Jacks?), how do you get people excited about it?
If you answered 'put caffeine in it' well, your mind works in ridiculous ways, and you probably work for Frito-Lay because that's exactly what they're doing!
Apparently, people have a problem with this. The nonprofit Center for Science in the Public Interest (CSPI) wants the Food and Drug Administration to take action before other food and beverage manufacturers create similar products — because they think a lack of regulations for other products than drinks makes the use of caffeine in them illegal.
Here's what the CSPI says:
“Unless the FDA begins enforcing its regulations, I fear that we’ll see caffeine being added to ever-more improbable drinks and snacks, putting children, unsuspecting pregnant women, and others at risk. How soon before we have caffeinated burgers, burritos, or breakfast cereals?”
Frito-Lay combats this by just saying that they're not meant for children and sites the change in packaging to consumers won't get them confused.
Maybe they should've come up with a name for them that isn't literally one letter different, then!
They sound gross, regardless… plus, if you have consumers asking 'why?' when you announce a new product, you know it's probably a bad idea.
