Seems pretty logical to us: get a bunch of head injuries, sustain brain damage. Right?
Well, an extensive study of the brains of dead athletes and others shows that MOST had signs of brain damage because of their head injuries. Meaning, brain damage is occurring way more often than we originally thought! Scary!
The report was published on the autopsies of 85 brain donors, and showed an extensive evidence of protein tangles clogging brain tissue and causing the destruction of brain cells in football players, wrestlers, hockey players, boxers, and military combat veterans.
Here's the most shocking part: 68 of the 85 individuals they examined had evidence of chronic traumatic encephalopathy.
Now here's the scary part: CTE can only be detected after death by staining tau protein deposits in brain tissue - a complex, several-month process that's like developing a photograph. CTE, therefore, is probably around more than we though in the living.
We absolutely need to put more focus on the safety of our players — we're talking treatment and equipment-wise. Who out there is designing a new kind of helmet??
It's about time we realize something needs to be done!
