Sir Ian McKellen has been living with prostate cancer for several years now!!
If he actively has cancer, it's amazing he was able to reprise his role as Gandalf in The Hobbit.
Regular exams are apparently enough to keep it in check.
"I've had it for six or seven years. When you have got it, you monitor it, and you have to be careful it doesn't spread. But if it is contained in the prostate, it's no big deal. Many, many men die from it but it's one of the cancers that is totally treatable, so I have [what is called] 'waitful watching'. I am examined regularly and it's just contained, it's not spreading. I've not had any treatment."
So they're just gonna let his cancer run wild?
Doesn't he just want to get rid of it??
"I have heard of people dying from prostate cancer, and they are the unlucky ones, the people who didn't know they had got it and it went on the rampage. But at my age if it is diagnosed, it's not life-threatening. They are concerned about the cancer spreading outside the prostate. If it doesn't, you are fine. How do you know if it is spreading? You keep being tested."
Well we'd feel better if Sir Ian was cancer free completely, but he seems to be living with his diagnosis just fine.
We hope his cancer never spreads and he lives a long life, full of more movie roles!
Glad to hear you're still healthy, Sir Ian!
