Next time you can't seem to get rid of a cough, instead of reaching for the cough syrup, you might want to reach for the Hershey's syrup!
According to a study out of the British National Health Service, theobromine, a chemical compound found commonly in chocolate, is a very promising cough suppressant, perhaps more so even than codeine!
How much chocolate would you need to eat to hit the recommended dose of the compound? Well, if it's unsweetened dark chocolate, just two ounces should be enough! With sweetened dark chocolate, you may want to triple that.
Unfortunately, milk chocolate has the least theobromine- you'd have to consume about a pound of it twice a day to have the same effect as the study!
Study leader Alyn Morice, MD says:
"Eating a bar of dark chocolate a day which has high levels of the compound may also be effective for people with diagnosed persistent cough, although eating chocolate on a daily basis may have other unwanted effects, including weight gain and so on."
Chocolate makes you gain weight??? Oh no! We need to change our breakfast routine! And dinner!
Also lunch. LOLz!
