After lots of pressure from Congress, the TSA has finally decided to study the effects of X-ray body scanners.
Odds are you or someone you know has been though a TSA full body backscatter scanner at least once before.
They are going to contract with the National Academy of Sciences to study the health effects of these machines.
Body scanners use ionizing radiation, known to cause cancer, but in small amounts.
A senator on the homeland security committee said:
"I am pleased that at long last the Transportation Security Administration has heeded my call to commission an independent examination into the possible health risks travelers and TSA employees may face during airport screenings."
We're glad that they're looking into this now. We just hope it's not too little, too late.
Way to think about making sure they're safe months AFTER starting using them all the time!
