1 In 25 Teens Have Attempted Suicide In The U.S.

Self Harm Depression Kids

This is one of those studies that we don't want to bring to your attention, but need to.

According to a new statistical study, 1 in 25 teens in the U.S. has attempted suicide, while 1 in 8 have thought about it. Take that in for a moment, as it's one of the saddest things we've ever read.

These results were gathered through in-person interviews with about 6,500 teens, and questionnaires filled out by parents. Teens were asked about suicidal thinking, plans, and attempts. The study also looked at who made the cut for a range of mental disorders, even though the study was not about diagnosing these kids to get them help. Luckily, more than half of the youth were already in treatment when they reported suicidal behavior.

In the end, 12+ percent of the youth had thought about suicide, and four percent had made a suicide plan or attempted suicide. Suicide is the third leading cause of death for people between age 10 and 24, killing about 4,600 young people annually.

If you, or your youth, have been thinking about suicide or are showing signs even without talking about it, it's probably best to get an evaluation. Depression, bipolar disorder, etc. are treatable and not anyone's fault. There is no shame in seeking help, as we all want you around for a very, very long time!
