Chicago's bank account is looking pretty nice after only 5 months!
In early August, they passed new ticketing laws for low-level possession of marijuana. We guess we should be happy that these folks aren't being arrested, but at what point do you realize that taxing legal weed would bring in way more money than punishing people?
They've issued about 400 citations and have given themselves about $98,000 dollars from citizens in the process. The idea behind it is that it's the lesser of evils if cops are freed from the time-hole of having to arrest people, and jails get a break too.
Another reason to do it was the cash, too. But, it looks like they're nowhere near their extra-7-million-dollars-a-year goal, and the city is only on track to take in about 3 percent of that.
So is it worth it? Yeah, we suppose so.
But at what point do you realize you could get all the benefits from above AND more money just by legalizing it like Colorado and Washington?
Seems like a no-brainer to us!
