The leading cause of death among the homeless used to be AIDS.
Now a new study has found it's actually drug overdoses, usually from painkillers and heroin.
The study looked at homeless adults who were treated through the Boston Health Care for the Homeless Program over a 5-year period.
The death rate from O.D.ing has tripled in the past 15 years!
"This trend is happening across the country, in non-homeless populations too. Homeless people tend to experience in a magnified way the health issues that are going on the general population."
So in general, people are abusing painkillers and drugs more!
That's no bueno, folks!
The Boston Health Care program is now realizing that even if a homeless person is legitimately injured, they still have to be careful what they prescribe them, saying:
"We have to become expert in integrating addiction services into the rest of medical care. We have decided to take a very thoughtful and critical look at the way that we prescribe these opiods."
Good! You're there to help people so help them better.
Drugs are bad, you guys! Don't take pills unless a doctor tells you to!
