This is HUGE news, you guys!!
Did you know that Russia is the second largest tobacco market in the WORLD? China's got them beat, for sure, but being #2 on a list like that is nothing to be proud of!
Well, we'll tell you what IS something to be proud of: Russian lawmakers just backed a law which would ban smoking in bars, cafes and other public spaces to promote healthier living!
Of course, the government steps are a little different in Russia, so it's not completely ready to go in effect yet — the bill was voted through in a second reading in the State Duma, the lower house of parliament, and must go through one more reading in both the lower and upper houses before being signed off by Putin.
President Putin is pro-health, so if the bill gets that far, he will sign off for sure… meaning they will also ban tobacco advertising entirely and restrict sales from kiosks!
Know what else was cool? It wasn't even a fight: 442 votes in favor, one against and one abstention.
If passed, the restrictions will be fully in force by 2016!! GOOD WORK, RUSSIA! That'll make the 2014 Winter Olympics and 2018 soccer World Cup a much better experience for SURE!
