Such a special moment!
Check it out above!!!
SOMEONE GIVE THIS KID AS MUCH CANDY AS HE WANTS!
Or is it Pokemon cards? What do kids like these days?? LOLz!!
Apparently they like inventing things that show up adult scientists around the world — 15 year-old Jack Andraka has invented a simple test that can detect the same pancreatic cancer that Steve Jobs had… but waaaaay earlier!
No to mention, its low cost.
Time is really of the essence with this kind of cancer, as it kills 19 out of 20 diagnosed patients within 5 years. That's a brutal statistic, and Jack just might be saving a lot of lives!
What Jack created is a simple dip-stick test for levels of mesothelin, a biomarker for early stage pancreatic cancer found in blood and urine. Usually we can't detect this type of cancer until it's final stages.
Instead of candy or game cards, Jack actually won $75,000 in scholarships at the 2012 Intel Science Fair. The patent-pending sensor is 28 times faster, 28 times less expensive, and over 100 times more sensitive than current tests!! HOLY SHIZZ!!!
The paper strips use just a drop of blood to determine whether patients carry the mesothelin biomarker, and is over 90 per cent accurate, and practically instant. Plus, it costs only 3 cents. Did we mention it can also be used to detect ovarian and lung cancer??
The only bummer from this story comes from the fact that 197 scientists did not want to give him a chance. It was Dr. Anirban Maitra, a professor of pathology and oncology at Johns Hopkins University, who agreed to give him space in the lab and to mentor him through the process of developing the test.
So not only do we want to thank Jack for this, but also Dr. Maitra! You guys are IN-CREDIBLE!!
