Let's get it out there right off the bat, shall we? We have no idea why ESPN Magazine has done this photoshoot! None! LOLz!
Apparently they want to make it a thing, though, to photograph sports stars recreating famous album covers, because they keep referring to it as the "first" music edition of the magazine. Still, the idea behind it escapes us, even if the covers ARE pretty faithful!
We just don't think Nirvana would really dig what they've done — with no offense to Ryan Lochte!
Mainly, Nirvana's cover was a subversive comment on our increasing consumer driven culture, and Ryan Lochte is ALL ABOUT that culture. We mean, he has grills and a giant closet — you couldn't get further from what Nirvana was going for by choosing Ryan for the shoot.
BEYOND MEANING THOUGH, Ryan nails the expression and pose perfectly, which is pretty cool! Ha!
Here's what he had to say about it, after calling the shoot 'Iconic Nirvana':
'The cover is definitely global, brah. He's chasing after a dollar bill. So he's always on the grind. If you look at the baby, he's definitely happy in the water. And that's what I am.'
'Trying to perfect the perfect the shot in the water was kinda easy for me. Just because I spend about four hours a day, every day of my life, in the water. Usually when I go swimming, I have goggles on. So when I didn't have my goggles on for this shoot my eyes were definitely burning.'
So is he worried that people are going to know full well that he got the message completely wrong? Nah!:
"Hopefully everyone's reaction when they see it, they'll be like, dang, look at that guy. I honestly think I nailed the shot."
Ryan — you nailed the shot. It's much more than that, though!
Our only gripe past the message is that you're not naked and TRULY replicating the cover! Ha!
