Brendon Ayanbadejo is a linebacker for the Baltimore Ravens and one of the most outspoken gay rights activists in professional sports.
First, let us say congrats on winning the Super Bowl!!
Second, being a straight pro athlete and "coming out" as a supporter of gay rights must be hard to do.
But Brendon knows that coming out as openly gay would be even harder for a player due to the generally homophobic atmosphere that dominates pro sports.
"There are many reasons why no gay athlete has come out in the NFL, NBA, NHL or MLB, most of which are likely to go away with support and acceptance from the straight community. As leaders and even role models for millions of young people across the globe, professional athletes have the ability to fundamentally eliminate prejudice from our sport and live up to the incredible privilege we enjoy."
What kind of message are closeted athletes sending today's youth??
We hope Brendon can influence more athletes and get them on the gay bandwagon!
"Now that I'm a Super Bowl champion, now my voice just projects that much further and hopefully it can lead to more change and more positive things for the LGBT community."
We really feel like the time is now.
Let's have an athlete come out in a major professional sport!
C'mon! It's your time to shine! Step out of the closet and into the history books!
