This is good news for anyone who smokes ganja! LOLz
On Thursday, New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg gave his final state of the city address, and during his speech, he announced that anyone who gets caught with small amounts of pot will no longer be subjected to spending a night in jail. Instead, they'll just make a desk appearance and will be let go shortly after.
Bloomberg has called this order because a lot of folks in NYC get busted with marijuana, and considering that weed was decriminalized in the city over three decades ago, this just doesn't make sense anymore.
“We know that there’s more we can do to keep New Yorkers, particularly young men, from ending up with a criminal record. Commissioner Kelly and I support Governor Cuomo’s proposal to make possession of small amounts of marijuana a violation, rather than a misdemeanor and we’ll work to help him pass it this year. But we won’t wait for that to happen. Right now, those arrested for possessing small amounts of marijuana are often held in custody overnight. We’re changing that. Effective next month, anyone presenting an ID and clearing a warrant check will be released directly from the precinct with a desk appearance ticket to return to court. It’s consistent with the law, it’s the right thing to do and it will allow us to target police resources where they’re needed most.”
Hopefully this tactic works because if pot heads are just gonna get a small slap on the wrist for having marijuana in their position, then wouldn't that make more people prone to carrying the drug?!?
Welp, there are always bigger fish to fry in the city, so anyone who's smoking for recreational purposes is definitely not as dangerous as someone who's actually dealing DRO!
