When EJ publicly came out as gay (adorably holding his boyfriend's hand while walking down the street), a lot of people wondered how Magic Johnson would react — and he reacted flawlessly!
If you think about it though, you begin to realize that this isn't just about EJ coming out (though that's the majority of it, and nobody can take that from him!), but also what it does for the black community AND the sports community tied up in their high-profile lives! And guess what? For Magic, it should all be positive regardless if there are a few nay-sayers! He then opened up about how he's supportive of it all!
It all started when EJ was 13. Magic went and point-blank asked him if he was gay! This was a way for Magic to let EJ know that he was loved and supported, and that his whole family was proud of him — there was no reason for him to hide, if he was!
When EJ came out, there were some hateful reactions on African-American blogs and community. With Magic's unparalleled support of the black community, people were wondering if he was bitter over the few negative reactions. Magic called attention to the religious portion of the black community as a source of the problem (even being religious himself!) and said that he didn't care who was attacking his son, he's going to still support and love him no matter what. He also said that they all expected some of this backlash to happen anyway!
Magic then spoke about how his support of his son could go on to inspire professional athletes to step up and come out, and Magic said he would react the same way he did with his son if one of the players on the L.A. Dodgers (he's one of the owners!) came out! As an owner, he feels like it's his duty to first and foremost support the player, then to educate the public!
We think both Magic and his son EJ are incredible people! The rest of their family too! We are so happy for them, we wish them all the luck!
We just can't wait for the day that when someone comes out, the non-supporters are so few and far between that their intolerance can't even be heard! Nobody deserve to feel bad for who they are when it comes to love!
