The pressure a career's height can bring!
Joan Collins, star of countless roles — like Dynasty — has said she battled like many others to keep her waistline in check. In check with what those around her thought was 'appropriate.' She was asked often to slim down for roles, especially when she was in the spotlight!
Unfortunately, she complied, and she did it in increasingly unhealthy ways. She even once lost eight pounds in two weeks because she started taking amphetamine — AKA speed!
"As an actress you are always on a diet when working. I was told to take speed to help get the weight off. At times I was told I wouldn't even get work because I was too fat… As soon as (casting directors) saw me in the flesh they insisted I go on a diet and exercise every day. It was tomatoes and cottage cheese, lettuce and cottage cheese and cottage cheese and cottage cheese. I was told I needed to lose eight pounds from my nine stone immediately. But I cheated and my doctor put me on a series of little green slimming pills which did work.
"I lost eight pounds in two weeks and two weeks' sleep, because I finally found out those little green pills contained speed."
What sucks is that the industry isn't all that different nowadays! There's still a LOT of pressure for Hollywood's leading ladies to stay slim and lose weight!
We think it's bullshizz — and we're just glad that Joan made it out of the experience okay. It might not have gone that way!
