No matter how you slice it, it was a big deal when Earvin Johnson III publicly came out of the closet!
It was important not only on a personal level for E.J., but on his community and family! Especially with how huge Magic (his father) is in the black community, church, and professional sports! It was incredible to see his unfiltered support for his son!
“I always had dreams and plans of doing my own thing and creating my own image, so it came a little sooner than I thought it would but this is still something I knew I would be going through and would have to experience.”
Unfortunately, not every news outlet and blog is happy for him (obviously they're awful and wrong), and it's been hard on E.J. — even though he expected it:
“They’d say nasty things about me and what I’m doing … It’s almost like they’re attacking me for being me, and so to that I can only say, ‘Well, I can only be myself, so I don’t know really what you want me to do.’”
Amazing stance!! Unfortunately, there's nothing you can do to those who have a difference of opinions (no matter how big of bigots they are), so focusing on the positive support — and there IS a lot out there! — will be the healthiest thing to do!
He even spoke about his family:
“I am very, very, very blessed to have the family that I do… when it was time to come out, I was, obviously, scared as most people are. After I got all the love and support from my family then I knew I could go out and conquer the world, I guess.”
Being out and proud and getting the support from the public is obviously important, but families need to realize that it's MOST important to be accepted by your loved ones first and foremost! Family is all that matters and being there with acceptance, love, and support will mean the world!
E.J. is taking his new publicity a step further for the LGBT community, and wants to be:
“the voice for young gay people who need someone to be on TV or wherever else to talk to them and talk about all kinds of issues that all of us face and not just homosexual issues but all kinds of issues. I definitely want to set a really good example.”
Brilliant, E.J.! You're a role model that we would be PROUD to have our young community look up to!
Just keep being an amazing human being, and you'll do amazing things!
