What's one way to avoid having to come out of the closet in the middle of your NFL career?
Go into the NFL already open and proud!
That's what Alan Gendreau aims to do if he gets a shot at a tryout for an NFL kicker position!
The best part is that's he phenomenal at what he does. He played with high distinction from 2008 to 2011, and was the leading scorer in Sun Belt Conference history, with 295 points over his career! Being gay has ZERO effect on ability!
Oh, and he's been openly gay since he was 15!
Last year he didn't get drafted, but not many kickers were. Still, he blames himself for that, saying:
“Right now, looking back when I’m 40, I can’t say I gave it my best shot. I can’t say I really tried to make it into the NFL. Last year I did it half-assed. If I don’t give it everything I have now, I’ll regret it for the rest of my life.”
He has a long road ahead of him to get invited to training camps and all of that where he could possibly get picked up in June/July, but if he's as dedicated as it sounds he is, we're pulling for him!
That would be incredible!
Hopefully it would help other players come out too — you never know!
