Raise your hand if you'd like a cure for HIV!
ALL OF YOU better be raising your hands! The disease has killed 25+ million people since 1981, and that is just plain unacceptable!
Apparently researchers at Denmark's Aarhus University Hospital believe they are "within months" of a breakthrough that could lead to an affordable cure — which is fantastic, but when you follow up "breakthrough" with "could lead to" that sounds like more steps than just curing the disease.
Still, we're extremely hopeful as that's still a very very bold statement!
The new process involves flushing the HIV from "reservoirs" in human DNA to the surface of cells — then they use a separate vaccine so the human body could kill the virus with its own immune system!
Here's what one research team member said:
“I am almost certain that we will be successful in releasing the reservoirs of HIV. The challenge will be getting the patients’ immune system to recognise the virus and destroy it. This depends on the strength and sensitivity of individual immune systems."
As of right now this new process has only been successful in human cells that are in a lab. Luckily there ARE human trials happening, with 15 patients participating at the moment! Rad!
The best thing about this announcement is that it's yet ANOTHER way scientists are finding to combat the disease! We could have multiple treatments to try if one doesn't seem to work 100% of the time: Australian scientists a way they could make the virus "self-destruct," and U.S. researchers at Johns Hopkins "functionally cured" a baby with HIV in March! They used antivirals right away after birth and it WORKED!
Amazeballs times we live in! Ha!
