The more we hear about Jason Collins' coming out as a gay professional NBA player, the more we're surprised to hear how good he was at keeping it a secret! EVERYONE he told was shocked!
His parents were among those floored by his revelation, and it took them a few moments to wrap their brains around it before they outwardly offered their support. And by moments, we really do mean that — it wasn't as if it took them a month to come to grips. In fact, it was on their way home from getting the news, according to his mom:
"Part of the process, after he told us, was to go home and kind of let it resonate, for the two of us to talk about it. And on the way home we called him. And on the way home we said, 'We love you.' "
Sure, we would prefer to hear that they immediately told him they supported him (deep down we're sure they felt this way, even if their brains hadn't caught up to their hearts), but at least they supported him soon after.
His mom continues:
"You're going through a lot of different checklists. 'Did you see this?' 'Did you think this?' No."
Here's what his dad had to say, who seemed to be more focused on Jason's future than his present — which was telling his parents the biggest news of his life. His dad said this:
"You have these things [that you think about]: 'He'll eventually get married.' 'He's waiting for the end of his career to do that.' And you just expect that that's going to happen. 'He'll have children,' and whatever it might be. And then … you change from that."
We're glad you changed from that, but seriously, that shizz shouldn't have been the first thing on your mind! You should've been focused on how difficult and courageous this was for Jason, and let those other details sort themselves out later!
Still, we're just happy you guys are standing with him at all! Too many times do we see parents abandon their children for not fitting preconceived mold in their heads!
To that, we applaud you guys!
