Chris Kluwe Cut By Vikings For Outspoken Support Of LGBT Community!

| Filed under: Gay Gay GaySad SadFootballLGBT

chris kluwe job loss kicker vikings pro lgbt community support sad awful

Chris Kluwe is one of the most high-profile athlete supporters of the LGBT community, and it looks like he's being replaced by a 5th round pick as kicker on the Minnesota Vikings because of it! UGH!

He was part of that team for EIGHT YEARS, and we agree with him that it has something to do with his work for equality — even as a straight married man with kids! He was most recently fighting legislation in Minnesota that would have banned same-sex marriage when he gained a bunch of notoriety for a profanity-lace letter he wrote to Maryland Assembly Delegate Emmett C. Burns that went viral.

Here's what he said about his cut and the bullshizz that it means:

'It’s a shame that in a league with players given multiple second chances after arrests, including felony arrests, that speaking out on human rights has a chance of getting you cut.'

We can't STAND how often players get second chances for doing awful things, but when one tries to do a good thing he loses his job! It makes no sense!

Obvs the Vikings aren't even touching the real reason with their response:

'[Kluwe] contributed to many victories and we wish Chris and his family the best and thank him for his contributions to the Vikings organization. Out of respect to Chris, we decided to release him now and allow time for him to sign with another team.'

Yeah, out of respect. BOO, THE VIKINGS ARE AWFUL.

We're so upset about this that we can't even think straight! It's SO offensive to us that supporting equality would result in a job loss!

We hope you find a better, more TOLERANT team, Chris!

Uh…I don't believe that's the real reason he was cut. I think you should research a little more before making these allegations.

I agree with Ryan. Kluwe's stats were down and he was also up for a salary bump. You're jumping to conclusions PerezHilton.com. Shame on you.

  3. John says – reply to this

He ranked 31st for punts inside the 20 yard line and 20th in gross average last year and he would be making 1.45 million with his replacement making a third of that. Not rocket science.

  4. 4

Shame on you perez!!! He was cut because the Vikings drafted a better punter. That's the nature of professional sports. SHEESH!

  5. Michele says – reply to this

He was NOT cut for being pro LGBT you fucking twat.

  6. Brittany says – reply to this

Of course the guy is going to say he was cut because of his support of the LGBT community! He isn't going to say ah well my stats were down and I wasn't producing like I used to. That is the nature of football. Players come and go, they get old, new players are drafted. Look at Peyton Manning for example. Do you even watch football Perez? And why are you taking this guys word for it? This is the most ridiculous post I have ever seen on your sight. Do some research before you get into a hissy fit.

Football is football…not everything has an agenda. I'm an avid lgbt rights supporter and was so proud that one of my vikings responded to that hateful letter from the Maryland rep. last year. But this cut was not about that; the two are mutually exclusive and I'm sure Kluwe will continue advocating for equal rights for all.

I'm gay… and a Vikings fan… and can say I really doubt he was cut for this words. His stats have been down and they did get someone fresh to keep longer. I'm sure he'll be just fine and find another team to call home. Still grateful for his beautiful words in his letter.

The comment of his was taken completely out of context. I watched a 10 minute interview with him that a local reporter gave. His response every time to the connection was, "I don't know, I'm not in those meetings. " Meetings being how and why they decide to keep/get players.

How dare you say he was cut based on his ties with the LGBT community. I understand that this is YOUR website and is full of your OPINION. But stop being a bully, based on your own bias. Get the facts before you vomit your HATE all over everyone else. Just because you stand up for your ideals, does not mean that anything that happens everywhere else is based solely against what you believe in and stand for. Kluwe's stats speak for job security and in a world where winning is the only thing, you must win to keep your job. He is NOT self-employed and he must keep up his job performance to keep his job - just like most of the rest of the world.

You actually writing these words for the world to see, proves your ignorance.

The MN LGBT community is huge in MN. The local 'celebrity' in MN is very supportive of the LGBT community. The politics in MN may be very behind in the times, but shame on you for perpetuating the HATE where none is implied.

This guy was NOT cut because of his controversial statements he made concerning anything Gay. He was let go because after 7 years with the Vikings his production was not what it had been. Plus his 5th round replacement will be making a fraction of what he makes, and keeping down salary as much as possible is important with respect to each teams salary cap numbers. Probably will end up saving over a million dollars this year alone.

  12. oni1319 says – reply to this

i can't believe you would assume this. stats are down, vikes need to save money. that's it. that is quite the wild accusation, i just lost a lot of respect for you.

  13. Tessa says – reply to this

As a MN Cikings fan and ardent supporter of LGBT rights, I must say I really don't think he was cut for his participation in the advocacy of equality. He has been a good punter for years but last year he lost his edge!! Furthermore, he is getting older and the Vikes are currently rebuilding. I think it is unfair for Kluwe to point to his advocacy as a scapegoat rather than his lack of performance.

  14. 14

You really so a little research about sports dickhead, then you would not make a complete FOOL of yourself when you rant out your agenda. Anyone who knows ANYTHING about football knows that he and you are full of shit.

  15. 15

"THIS IS BULLSHIZZ!" you are absolutely right. Your entire made up story is BULLSHIT

•Kluwe finished 2012 ranked No. 31 among NFL punters in a statistic the Vikings value highly: punts downed inside the 20. Of Kluwe's 72 punts, 18 settled in what the league considers poor field position. By comparison, the Chicago Bears' Adam Podlesh nearly doubled Kluwe's total among his 81 punts. Podlesh finished with 34, while Green Bay Packers punter Tim Masthay had 30 in 70 punts.
•Kluwe set a career high with a 39.9-yard net average, but that mark still ranked in the lower half (No. 18 overall) among punters.
•In a relatively flat salary-cap era, the Vikings had an opportunity for significant savings. Because of a rarely needed NFL rule, Kluwe has no acceleration remaining on his six-year deal. Thus, all of his projected $1.45 million cap figure has been erased. His replacement, Jeff Locke, will count about a third of that total. In two years, in fact, the Vikings have shaved 23 years off the combined age of their punter and place-kicker and have lowered their cap commitment for those roles by two-thirds.

  17. 17

he was cut because he sucked…

  18. Kj says – reply to this

Perez, Minnesotans in general are big supporters of equal rights. I echo all of these comments, Vikings made a football decision about a football player. I have been fond of Kluwe and his choice to speak out for what he believes in is great, but it does not make him immune to the #s and $$$ restraints of the team. You should consider writing an update to this post

  19. BS METER says – reply to this

He was cut because he was statistically one of the worst punters in the NFL. But, since you will use ANYTHING to further your agenda, it's no surprise that you didn't research that.

  20. 20

    Hey Perez,

I think you need to apologize. Or, at least admit you made an "Ooops, I jumped the gun on this story. I will do better research next time."

But will you? Credibility on the line on this one.

  21. 21

Umm are you sure he was actually cut because of this, or was he cut because he's a bad player or for making a ridiculously high salary request? Seems to me like it was one of those and he's just using this to exploit sensationalism to make him look like a victim..

  22. martin101 says – reply to this

he got cut because he had a bad season, look up his stats before you go all anti gay on it

  23. ranger says – reply to this

he had a bad season and thats why he cut

  24. Minnesota Gopher says – reply to this

Thank you Minnesota Girl!! This type of "News" reporting sucks. What ever happened to reporters being non-judgemental? Do you even know what his stats were as a punter? How much he got paid? This is a business? Your lack of knowledge is just down right disappointing in trying to show that all Minnesotans are homophobes. Please stop spreading false information…….this does not help your cause in supporting the LGBT…in fact, it hurts it with false claims!!!

  25. Alex says – reply to this

This article should be taken down. It's incredibly ignorant and wrong. Shame on the "writer" of this article for doing ZERO research and just making assumptions. Chris Kluwe is not the player he used to be and that's why he was cut. To make these claims against the Minnesota Vikings is incredibly irresponsible and offensive. Grow up.

  26. 26

Re: ryan – The idiot homo never does research. He'll buy into anything that supports his silly little cause. And when he's proven wrong, he's not even big enough to post an apology. No … Perez is one dumb fucking homo and the biggest hater of them all. And he claims that the kid he bought changed him. Nothing will change him, especially not a kid he's going to ruin.

  27. No says – reply to this

"he's being replaced by a 5th round pick as kicker" - I stopped reading there. You have no idea what you are talking about.

  28. Nate says – reply to this

Kluwe was scheduled to make 1.45 million, he had a bad season last year, and has never been a top tier punter. He was serviceable, but Locke is a rare punter in terms of quality and skillset. Also, he will only make 500k. That's reason alone.

  29. nathan says – reply to this

I have to admit, when I clicked on the link to this article via bleacher report, I expected this kind of non researched, ignorant rant by Mr. Hilton, but I did also expect to see a bunch of his and the LGBT community supports patting him on the back. I have to say, after reading all these comments I am really happy to see a lot of educated football fans writing the truth in their posts, not just trying to expand their agenda, awesome to see this. Good work ladies and gentleman!!! Proud to be a Vikes fan. That being said, I wish the best of luck to Mr. Kluwe in his future endeavors in the NFL. And hope that Mr. Hilton realizes his readers won't support his ignorant, baseless, factless bullshit. Do your job and do some research before opening your mouth about a topic you obviously know NOTHING about!!!!! Skol Vikings!!!!
