This. Is. AWESOME!!!

The Gay, Lesbian & Straight Education Network will be giving Jason Collins the Courage Award at the end of this month at the GLSEN Respect Awards for being the first openly gay, active athlete in the NBA, MLB, NFL, or NHL!

Executive Director Dr. Eliza Byard says they are THRILLED to be honoring Jason, saying:

"His decision to come out is a game-changer for sports and will have a profound impact on the lives of lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender youth, particularly those who participate in or want to participate in athletics. Jason’s actions also send another clear message to young people that sexual orientation can no longer be the standard to unfairly judge an athlete’s ability or potential. Joining the ranks of trailblazers like Martina Navratilova, Greg Louganis, Wade Davis and Brittney Griner, we have witnessed another obstacle overcome in sports."

We can't think of anyone more deserving of the award!

Jason has become an icon for his decision to come out, and he's received tons of support from his fellow basketball players and NBA Commissioner David Stern!

We're already so proud of him for making such a brave choice to make the announcement, and we're glad to see he's being honored for the historic event!

Way to go, Jason! You totally deserve it!

And yet you haven't commented on the backlash it's caused, like the gays that were beaten after a Knicks game.
