Barbara Walters Reveals She Had Her Ovaries Removed! Inspired By Angelina Jolie's Double Mastectomy News!

| Filed under: TV NewsBarbara WaltersAngelina JolieSuper SeniorsInspirationHealth

Angelina Jolie was so brave to reveal to the world her decision to undergo a double mastectomy.

And her courage is giving others the strength to talk about their own procedures!

Barbara Walters said today on The View that she too had preventative surgery! She said:

"My sister passed away from ovarian cancer and I had my ovaries removed. It’s not like having the breasts because people don’t see it. But it’s a decision you have to make — it’s preventative. What I think with Angelina Jolie — she’s such a sex symbol and we associate sex with breasts. And the fact that she did this and has retained her beauty and her sexuality. I think it was brave of her, she did it for her own health, but it was so brave to write about it. A women’s sexuality is not tied up with her breasts."

Ch-ch-check out the video (above) to hear the whole heated conversation!

We applaud the bravery of these women to speak so candidly about their struggles, using their celebrity to help to remove the shame from these potentially life-saving sacrifices.

You go, gurls!

If you want to help Barbara in the fight against ovarian cancer, you can donate to her fundraiser here.

I agree that Angelina Jolie is brave and beautiful.
And it's not like having fake breasts is an detriment in Hollywood; in fact, it seems to be the opposite. Huge step for her. I hope they didn't find anything growing in there when they opened her up.
Wishing her a continuing wonderful life.

Preventative? Surgery is the LAST option in any case. There are so many things she could have done. I would love to know all of the things (diet, exercise, supplements, etc) she tried to naturally defend herself against cancer. Just a simple supplement like Turmeric would have helped greatly.

But this is typical Western/American medicine. DO NOT treat the root cause. Medicate and cut is what we do.

Simply example: Most doctors will not tell an obese perosn they need to loose weight to in order to help relieve aches and pains, diabetes, etc . Better yet, they prescribe pain medication, insulin, or offer surgery. Why? That's where the MONEY is!!

Someone with the wealth and means Angelina has should have exhausted every possible treatment. Again, cutting is the LAST thing to ever do.

I wish Barbara would cut off her head to prevent the possibility that she might contract brain cancer someday.

I think people should be able to decide for themselves what they want to do with their bodies. People like Mike are idiots and should not put down people because I'm assuming Mike does not have breasts and this is not an issue he will ever face. The same gene runs in my family and my aunts and mother have done the same. If you can cut down the chance by almost 90% like she did how can that say going the natural route is best because you'll always have that worry hanging over you. This gives are huge advantge of not getting these types of cancers. I also find it great that she'e trying inform woman of her journey with it because preventing this from occruing by taking these measures is very invasive but can be the best bet to keep living when the odds are really not in your favor.

9 times out of 10 it's men who are reacting negatively to this subject. It's extreme, but it's her choice.

I applaud Barbara Walters for sharing her story. Women need to know though that the female sex organs (ovaries, tubes, uterus) have non-reproductive (lifelong) functions. These functions are detailed in a YouTube video titled "Female Anatomy: The Functions of the Female Organs." The ovaries of an intact woman produce hormones into her 80's if she has all her parts and are essential for optimal health. Ovary removal (castr*tion) increases risk for heart disease, stroke, hip fracture, Parkinsonism, dementia, cognitive impairment, skin and hair changes, ocular changes, lung cancer, sleep disturbances, sexual dysfunction, depression, anxiety. Estrogen cannot adequately replace what is lost.

I hope she's at least keeping her uterus for pelvic and skeletal integrity. Otherwise, she'll get the post-hysterectomy spine compression, thick midsection, poochy belly. back pain. Her bladder and bowel will also fall increasing risk of prolapse and incontinence. And we know the problems there have been with the mesh used to correct prolapse. Her vagina may also prolapse over time too because there won't be anything anchoring it.
