Angelina Jolie Underwent A Double Mastectomy To Prevent Breast Cancer!

angelina jolie breast cancer article

The sparkling Empress that is Angelina Jolie has JUST revealed that she recently underwent a double mastectomy in order to greatly reduce her risk of breast cancer!

In a poignant NY Times article, Angie expresses that ever since her mother began battling cancer — a battle she eventually lost in her 50s — the actress always knew she might be genetically prone to experiencing the life-sucking affliction.

The director and diplomat shares:

"My doctors estimated that I had an 87 percent risk of breast cancer and a 50 percent risk of ovarian cancer, although the risk is different in the case of each woman.

Only a fraction of breast cancers result from an inherited gene mutation. Those with a defect in BRCA1 have a 65 percent risk of getting it, on average.

Once I knew that this was my reality, I decided to be proactive and to minimize the risk as much I could. I made a decision to have a preventive double mastectomy. I started with the breasts, as my risk of breast cancer is higher than my risk of ovarian cancer, and the surgery is more complex."

She goes on to describe her experiences with various surgeries and concludes the article by detailing her reasons for sharing this very personal information, information she's kept private until now.

Angelina expresses:

"I choose not to keep my story private because there are many women who do not know that they might be living under the shadow of cancer. It is my hope that they, too, will be able to get gene tested, and that if they have a high risk they, too, will know that they have strong options.

Life comes with many challenges. The ones that should not scare us are the ones we can take on and take control of."

Wow!

We are incredibly impressed by Mz. Jolie's decision, not only to go under the knife, but to then share her story with the world in hopes that she can help someone prevent the terrible!

It's not "brave", it's stupid. When one has a genetical risk of developping cancer, the procedure is to have them checked at least once a year, up to every six months. Removing healthy organs just for the hell of it is insane and the surgeon who accepted to do this is highly unprofessionnal.

how brave is that, if she did that out of fear?

If you watch a loved one die from a disease that you are genetically prone to perhaps your ideas on her "cowardace and fear" would change. She has quite a few children and they're just breasts and she has the money to reconstruct them. Sure they can do check ups every 6 months or perhaps 1 year but doctors miss things all the time, labs gets things wrong or perhaps she didn't want to cross the cancer road. Either way, she did what she felt she had to do to take control of the situation rather than wait around hoping she doesn't get a test back saying she has cancer.

I think the reason he is saying she's brave is that most women would not make that choice, they'd rather hold onto their breasts until the last possible moment. Sorry, but there's no cure for cancer and I'm sure every one of us has met someone or known someone who has lost a battle to the disease.

@jene I completely agree. It's not a "strong" choice it's a highly uneducated one. Hopefully, most women who have tested for the gene will be more discerning and proactive, and not subject to Mrs. Jolie's influence.

There are many ways to manage and deal with the "shadow of cancer" that have nothing to do with getting your tits removed. Just because you have the gene, doesn't mean that the gene will be expressed.

My aunt went thru this. She had four sisters who died from Cancer. She was tested, and had the double mastectomy. Thank you, Angelina Jolie. By sharing this with the world, she is saving lives. I bet there are women out here who didn't even know you could get tested to see if you were at risk. Angelina watched her own mother die of breast cancer. God bless her for talking about this publically.

Unless you've seen someone in your immediate family or a close friend battle cancer, you have no idea. My Dad fought colorectal cancer, recovered, then esophageal cancer, almost died …trust me, I don't want to see that BITCH, cancer again.

  8. 8

Angie DID IT AGAIN…..she stole Poor Bitter Barren Spinster Jennifer Aniston's marriage thunder RIGHT FROM UNDER HER…..

@Jene: Maybe to you it's stupid, but a lot of women actually do that. It's very traumatizing to watch your mother or someone you love succumb to cancer. Maybe she didn't want to even rick getting the disease in the first place. Besides, what's to say the disease won't spread and metastasize to other organs? The surgeon who did the surgery is not 'unprofessional' as you put it. You are just woefully uninformed and pretending you know more about the medical profession than you actually do.

Re: giselle – Giselle, please get informed and try to educate yourself. You obviously know very little about this testing and how a preventive mastectomy can save your life. Angelina Jolie did exactly the right thing for HER. Genetic testing is EXTREMELY important and can be life saving.

    11

She did the right thing. As a BC survivor myself, had I known ahead of time, I would have done exactly what she did. Her procedure was medically necessary, it was a matter of when not if.

Re: Jene – Shut the fuck up you moron.

  13. Mia1214 says – reply to this

    13

Yes, Jolie did what was good for her - she always does what's good for her, whether it be breaking up a marriage, adopting accessory babies or send millions of dollars to other countries while ignoring the one she was raised in - doesn't mean it was the right choice. Furthermore, when one in forty women are said to have the gene in question, how many of those women can afford to have this done? Most can't. Hell, here in the US most women don't even have adequate healthcare. The best they can hope for is the yearly free screenings hospitals provide and heaven forbid they actually end up with cancer because then they have no way to pay for treatment. Treatment is reserved for those who have the money and resources to address the issue. If Jolie really wanted to educate and support women in the fight against breast cancer all she had to do was say that she had the gene and that women need to be checked regularly - she didn't need to go into a highly detailed description, which, at this point, I'm finding suspect anyway. Both the woman and Brad were seen out and about at public functions during the time period and she looked just fine. I know other women who've had this procedure and they couldn't get out of bed for weeks - and that was before the reconstruction. Either Jolie has cornered the market on pain or this is just another one of her many attention whore moments in history.

  14. 14

If anyone believes she did this as a way to "prevent cancer" you're naive. She's had 3 kids and she's getting older. She needed a way to justify getting breast implants (since she's against plastic surgery) and this is a way for her to do so. Nothing she ever does is for anything but selfish, self-promoting, and self-absorbed reasons.

Im not a Jolie fan, but Im impressed by her choice, my sister died of breast cancer, a long time ago, I wish the option had been available for her…

My prayers, and all good thoughts are with Angelina ,and her family
As difficult as a mastectomy would be for the average woman, can you even begin to imagine how much harder it would be for a woman known to be a sex goddess
(not a label she gave herself)
I think Angelina is a very bright woman, and I'M sure she had excellent medical advice before she went ahead with the procedure
Lets hope she will be around for a long, long , long time to keep spreading her love and her good will

  17. 17

I can't believe some of the comments here!! Like too many other women, Angelina was faced with a high likelihood of getting breast cancer and chose to be proactive. It is a horrible decision to be faced with, and a brutal procedure to endure. Getting checked every six months is often not enough. And anyone who would seriously think that she would do this just to get new boobs is ridiculous.

  18. 18

Why do people always put this woman on a pedistal she doesn't deserve!? She's done nothing different from Kathy Bates or Chistina Applegate(who actually had cancer!) and other's who've spoken publically about the disease. I'm really sick and tired of this woman grasping any straw to make it to the Time's cover. And you can bet that she'll be the Woman of the Year. Even though she really doesn't deserve it.

  19. 19

Bitch please…..you aint special and mostly we DONT GIVE A FUCK ABOUT U

Re: Kmosuch – There was a Blind Item floating around a few months ago that people kinda pointed to Angelina. It talked about an actress getting breast implants and her almost husband paying for it or something.

  23. 23

Good for her. Her biological children now know that they have to be tested as well. This includes her son. Anything that you can do to avoid this shocking disease has to be done. And more than likely you do know someone who has died from this, or who is battling it right now.

  24. 24

This had to be an extremely difficult decision for her. wish her speedy recovery

  27. 27

Sparkling empress? You're a fucking idiot. She's a nutjob whore who does things for attention. I don't care what doctors think are your "chances" for getting cancer. She could've kept her tits and monitored the situation closely. The dumb bitch chose to mutilate herself and instead of being discreet, she chooses to make a big deal out of it. This shit isn't helpful to women who have REAL problems but who don't have her millions of dollars to undergo procedures and then have breast reconstruction. This woman needs a fucking lobotomy … and to all of you morons who will coo about how "brave" she is, you need lobotomies too. She's not brave. She's a stupid, attention-junkie whore.

  28. 28

Re: Informed – Shut up. Just because someone disagrees with your viewpoint doesn't mean he/she needs to be educated. YOU need to have some manners punched into your stupid self. What Jolie did was STUPID. Fuck off if you don't like that, asshole.

  29. 29

i am not a big angelina fan, but there are some seriously hateful people out there with major issues. really — angelina cut off her boobs to upstage jennifer aniston's wedding??!!!? and "being against plastic surgery" is just as asinine, considering how different and frozen angelina looks now compared to when she was a model at age 16. and if you had a 90% chance of developing breast cancer, you might consider something preventative too rather than living in constant fear of developing a potentially fast-acting cancer. yes, she might be self-absorbed, but i really don't think she's going through this for publicity's sake. she doesn't have to give so much of her money and time to charity. she could just keep everything for herself, but she doesn't. like i said, i'm not an angelina fan, but you have to give credit where credit's due. sheesh. kudos to her for bringing attention to a horrible cancer than takes too many lives.

  30. 30

and if she were really a "whore" about this, she would have sold her story to one of the sh*tty rags rather than write an op-ed for the NYTimes. keep in mind, saying sh*tty things about her now just makes you seem like an assh*le.

Exactly! i cant believe people are saying all this crap about her, this is a serious issue. My mom has cancer so i totally support Angie in this one

  32. 32

Watch one of your loved ones get literally eaten away by this disease, then learn there's a HIGH chance of it happening to you. See what you would do in this situation. I have a friend who did this when she learned she was high risk. Her mom had breast cancer, her 2 aunts, and her grandmother. She did what she thought was right for herself. It's a personal decision, get over it.

    35

Re: hauntedmansion – When have you ever seen Angie on times. Bates and Applegate had cancer. Angelina lowered her risk and since she is mostly known for her beauty much more the Appelgate and Bates I would say that is a difference since Joile didn't have cancer yet. She could have risk the odds and chose beauty before fame. And applegate had reconstructive surgery and I'm sure Angie will too.

    @TheKill
Very true! I read the original article published on NY Times and ALL comments there were positive (there were about a 100 when I read it).
There was no one who left a nasty and insulting comments like so many did here. Most people who commented on NY Times very obciously did some research on the topic before writing something - which very clearly a lot of people here didn't, judging by what they wrote and how uneducated they sound.

AS much as I admire Angelina for her Charitable Work Acting skills this was a bad choice on her part. She had better options available to her such as have test and Check ups every other Month, , Monitor it closely, see what other Doctors suggest, ETC.Part of her decision was based on fear, her doctor should have recommended she take her time with this Major decision and get more information.I am sure in the coming Months when the realization of what she has done hits her she will regret it.Unfortunately you can not change what has been done.AntyDoctor who suggest are removes a Healthy part of the Body should loose there Medical LicenseThere is never any reason to remove a Healthyp art of the body

Re: barny – You have no idea what you are talking about. A woman I have worked with for years just found out she was a carrier of the same gene and had the same surgery, so obviously many doctors suggest this sort of thing. Why should someone live their life paranoid that there is a good chance theyll end up with breast cancer? And to all the idiots saying monitor it closely, its like saying wait till you have cancer a DEADLY disease to do anything about it. Why not nip it in the bud? Most smart people would.

Seriously? Are some of you that naive? Of course there were no negative posts on her Huffpost blog - it has moderators to eliminate posts the columnists won't approve of. Her majesty would never approve of anything negative being said about her. I don't know where anybody else has been reading but I've seen and heard quite a few negative comments regarding the choice the woman made and whether or not she actually even had the procedure done. Not everybody thinks this woman is wonderful, obviously, or Brad wouldn't have felt the need to make a public statement in support of what she did. You can guarantee they're getting flack from inside the industry, the public just doesn't hear about it. This was all a very well planned publicity strategy.

Some horrible nasty comments here, what I can say to this is, you cannot remove hate with a surgery, would be great if that would be possible, same with stupidity!
Back to Angelina Jolie, it was her choice, it is her body, it was her risks, it's her life, she told her story to tell this other people! People should think about their health that's all, everyone can make his own descisions.

  49. Jessica C. says – reply to this

    49

From what I can see most of you people commenting are on the Angelina hate or Team Jennifer bandwagons. What I have experienced at work my self, I have seen several women get breast cancer and have it spread so quickly. Or do chemo, no mastectomy and have the cancer come back. Taking my own experience as a medical professional, I'd get mine removed ASAP! This whole thing of people w/o insurance is crazy, there are several programs, including state coverage that help with the cost. So you bitter angry women, even if you hate Mrs. Jolie please stop writing your lies and spreading hate on a story that is meant to help others make an EDUCATED decision. Also, my mother and her sister are cancer survivors, but I do have an aunt (my mothers sister) that passed, so I myself will consider getting tested now. I was just sticking to the screenings now that I'm getting older, near the age they were diagnosed, I'm thinking differently. I cannot imagine not being around for my own child.

Re: barny – Yes, because every woman should be getting a clinical breast exam, mammogram, breast US and breast biopsy every other month… To top it off, always living in fear. I'm assuming you are a man & have no idea how screenings work? I've seen so many patients die of cancer, I'm sure they would have done some thing to prevent it, if there was an option to do something about it ahead of time. Hope one day you don't regret your ugly comments and ignoring this story that could help save your life or the life of a loved one.
