Robbie Rogers Makes History As The First Openly Gay Active Male Athlete In The US!

| Filed under: Gay Gay GayInspirationSoccer

robbie rogers first active openly gay us athlete

When Jason Collins came out as the first gay athlete in US men's team sports, we knew it wouldn’t be long until others followed his courageous lead.

We were right!

During the LA Galaxy soccer game on Sunday, Robbie Rogers returned to the field, making him the first active male athlete in US professional team sports to be openly gay!!!

Rogers walked away from the game he loves in February and this was his first return as an openly gay man.

How brave!

Collins is still a free agent and looking for a team, which is why Rogers has made history as the first active player.

Like the true professional he is, after the match, Rogers said:

"I guess this is a historic thing, but for me it was just a soccer game.”

As usual, teammate Landon Donovan was extremely supportive, saying:

"Because of the nature of the way sports has been for so many years — the macho culture that's been embraced by everybody — it's of interest to everybody. Now, hopefully, the hype about it is over and he can get back to being a soccer player, which is what he wants to do."

We’re thrilled that the tides are turning in US sports and that people are feeling confident enough to be who they really are!!!

why is everyone on television gay or in the closet? is this some kind of trend or PR stunt because i'm finding it to be more gays than straight people.

I agree Lostyouskittles, this guy is a no name hack just like Jason Collins. They are coming out in order to try and prolong careers that need to be over now

I know everyone wants to be accepting with gays but in regards to athletes….there has to be a major elephant in the mens change room when a player is gay.

Also, Robbie came out before Jason Collins. One google search would have told you that.

    He looks like a fruit.

I still dont understand why anyone cares one way or the other. So what if some is gay then be happy for them and there is no need to bring it up. Also no one ever heard of this guy before so its impact is small anyway.

    Please enough already with your
    HOW BRAVE

Brave would be soldiers fighting for, dying for their country
Brave would be cops/firefighters working the streets of Chicago
Brave would be the old lady who kicked the ass of her mugger

Robbie & Jason are not brave, just two gay guys who came out of the closet
and climbed on the bandwagon looking for some attention

Good for him! Intentional or not he is a role model for others to come out and be proud of who they are and show the world that your sexuality does not make one fucking bit of difference in your ability to play sports. Not one bit of difference at all. If other players have an issue with that then let them be exposed for the homophobes they are publicly. And let the tide of popular opinion hit them where it truly hurts: the pocket book.

Re: NoOne – It's called homohphobia for a reason. Someone who is uncomfortable with their own sexuality or feels threatened. Straight men who have neither of these hang ups about gay men couldn't care less. And yes there a lot of straight men who are not homophobic. Have you personally ever met one?

Re: Mr Pete – And what do they all have in common? They all have targets on their backs (possibly with the exception of the old lady) and including the athletes.

Damn there are a serious a punt of homophobes on this site - you'd have thought you have a enough to deal with in your backwards lives but no you come on here spouting your diatribe.

'Why is everyone on TV gay' - dumbass, what a stupid generalisation, get an education already.

'Elephant in the room' - only if you're an inbred caveman you stupid douche.

I'd suggest all you homophobes out there go back to fiddling with yourself whilst pretending bit to like that feeling you get when you finger your hole.

Perez, just so you know, Robbie Rodgers came out first. He came out earlier in 2013 (February), whereas Jason Collins didn't come out until late April, early May of 2013.

As a huge soccer fan, and also a fan of Rogers, I want people to know that Robbie paved the way. Jason Collins spoke with Robbie about his experience for advice.

    Re: Mr Pete

    A. You're an idiot.
    B. You're an idiot who has a point reminding us about other people who are brave also.
    C. You're an idiot.

  17. 17

So what? He should be known for how he plays on the pitch, not who he sleeps with. I don't have a problem with it but I am sick of hearing about gay gay gay.

Major-league baseball player Glenn Burke was comfortably out to his teammates and friends in 1976

  19. 19

Brave? Yeah no. Running into a burning building is brave, putting your life in imminent danger to save someone else is brave, informing the world you're gay isn't brave, people either go "yay" or call him a homo, that's about it.

Why is it that anyone time a black person does something in this country we have celebrated and applauded and commemorated the occasion and now that these gay men are doing the same it is for publicity?
It is such a double standard. Unfortunately, we do live in a culture where it is brave to come out as public figure whether it's sports or entertainment.
I applaude all who choose to publicly live as the person they were born because neither are a choice.

  21. 21

Good god he LOOKS like a queer. He may have thought he was doing something amazing by confessing that he likes it up the ass, but he didn't say anything that people didn't already know. Brave? No. Obvious? Yes. Nobody cares what he does with his asshole and his cock; being gay isn't glamorous our brave, it's deviant and gross. So stfu, you nasty ape-faced homo.

Perez writes many of the comments to his "stories". He would be happy if everyone was gay but too stupid to realize it would be the end of the human race. Why does anyone pay attention to this queer? Get a life and let this disgusting pos go back to the ditch he's from.
