serena williams denies making offensive comments about steubenville rape victim

Serena Williams has some SERIOUS explaining to do!

The tennis superstar has come under some heavy fire recently after an interview with Rolling Stone quoted her making some harsh comments about the Steubenville rape victim.

The interviewer wrote about watching a news report with Serena, when she said the following SHOCKING comments:

"She's 16, why was she that drunk where she doesn't remember? It could have been much worse. She's lucky. Obviously, I don't know, maybe she wasn't a virgin, but she shouldn't have put herself in that position, unless they slipped her something, then that's different."

LUCKY??! You cannot be serious, Serena!

Well, the criticism must've gotten back to her, because now she's apologizing for her insensitive remarks. Sort of…

Serena released a statement on her website where she seems to be arguing that she never made the comments in the first place:

"What happened in Steubenville was a real shock for me. I was deeply saddened. For someone to be raped, and at only sixteen, is such a horrible tragedy! For both families involved – that of the rape victim and of the accused. I am currently reaching out to the girl’s family to let her know that I am deeply sorry for what was written in the Rolling Stone article. What was written – what I supposedly said – is insensitive and hurtful, and I by no means would say or insinuate that she was at all to blame."

We're not quite sure if this statement qualifies as an apology, but the whole thing definitely leaves an icky taste in our mouths.

We really would hope that Serena would be smarter than to make such horribly offensive comments, especially since she considers herself an advocate for women's equality.

Audrie Pott was not the Steubanivlle rape victim, she was from California.

    2

ummm Perez just an FYI Audrie Potts is NOT the Steubenville rape victim- they don't even live in the same state.

  3. Bobel says – reply to this

    3

Audrie Pott has nothing to do with the Steubenville rape case. She was from California, not Ohio. Get your facts straight, moron.

  4. 4

Why the fuck are people reaching out to the accused ? Um they RAPED A YOUNG GIRL. I am sick of people talking about these disgusting little fucks like they did nothing wrong. Fuck off with that shit, send them to jail and be done. For anyone to say she deserved it is wrong, and gross. NO ONE DESERVES RAPE! If people say it was her fault they are simply horrible humans and I hope they die.

Audrie Pott was not the Steubenville rape victim. She unfortunately was a victim of a similar case in California. Please get your details straight.

  6. 6

Well, IMO raped is better than murdered. So, yeah she's lucky it wasn't something worse than rape. She also has a point about her being 16 and drunk.

Is it bad that I agree with what Serena said? In all honesty…she makes a valid point.

  8. 8

I am a rape victim. What bothers me the most is, Serena was quoted saying she didn't agree with the punishment the boys received, and thinks they were harsh. ARE YOU KIDDING ME?! I suppose they should have just been scolded, with a stern warning to never do it again?
If you have ever been raped, you know the long-lasting, psychological problems and anxiety that she will live with for the rest of her life. It is so sickening how people think they shouldn't be punished because all parties involved were drunk and young. They knew it was wrong, and the only reason they are remorseful is because they're being punished. Raping classmates at parties is not common, nor is it normal. IT IS CRIMINAL.
As for "she's lucky", that's the same thing the cops and nurses told me- simply because I was still alive. That was probably the most hurtful comment I had gotten…lucky?! If this girl is lucky, then so is any woman who has been drunk at any party and not gotten killed.
Rape culture is alive and well, friends.

  9. 9

Re: PeasAndCarrots – IMO, I would much rather be murdered than to ever experience another rape.

Who caes? She's right and she's allowed to say whatever she wants. Why do people get so butthurt over things so much. Get over it.

Re: Codex Gigas – I totally agree, maybe I wouldn't say die but they deserve all the public shame, and to be convicted and registered sex offenders. It was disgusting what they did, if she didn't sleep enough, didn't eat enough, drank of one glass too much, that's how you black out. I'm shocked a woman would say that. DISGUSTING. The only family who deserves an apology is the girl's.

  12. 12

Whatever. I think what she said makes a lot of sense. What's wrong with taking precautions? We're quick enough to point out other situations where people should protect themselves, why not this one?
That being said, those boys should get the maximum penalty possible because they have no excuse whatsoever for being the little pukes that they are.

  13. 13

Granted a guy who rapes a girl is a piece of shit, vile asshole. Needs to go to jail, HOWEVER, I am so sick of these little slut whores that dress all provocative, act cute and coy, get drunk and yet some how people don't think she did anything wrong. That BOGGLES my mind. Fuck her, that's what she gets for being a little att whore.

  14. 14

Re: Jessicalc – Next time dont be a slut because I can tell from your pic you're an att whore.

  15. 15

Re: pollopicu – Hahaha, bitch, I'm 22 now and been with two guys. I was wearing a baggy shirt and sweat pants when it happened. I was a straight-A student, also. & seriously, my picture, OF MY FACE? You act like I have my boobs out or something. Go ahead, keep perpetuating rape culture and blame me for what happened, an event you know nothing about.

  17. 17

Re: pollopicuRe: pollopicuRe: pollopicu – I can tell from your THOUSANDS (ain't nobody WITH A JOB got time for that) of comments, that you're a depressed, angry, lonely, 16 year old fatty with a busted face, who thinks she's much more intelligent than she is. Pray tell, do the asinine comments you write on here give you the outlet you so desperately need, so you won't cry yourself to sleep every night?
I suppose it could also be the source of what pathetic, little confidence you have, letting you see yourself as some sort of keyboard badass?
Hmm, I guess assumptions ARE fun! ;)

  18. 18

Re: Jessicalc – Yes, I can tell just by your face. Your typical generic trash. There are about a billion girls who look JUST like you. but I bet you think you're special. Do not look further than the Jersey shore if you want to see what image you project. You don't have to show breasts to look like a little slut.

  19. 19

Re: Jessicalc – lmao I just got home from work and am STILL in my chef jacket, asshole.

  20. 20

This society really amazes me. Assholes, like the girl who got raped, want to be able to do WHATEVER they want to do, and they can do whatever they want all day long, but one thing they need to remember is this….there are Con-se-quen-ces to the dumb ass choices you make in your life. Homegirl made the CHOICE to go to a party and DRINK at 16, well, now she has to pay the consequences…Of course men who rape NEED to go to jail, no matter what, but when you drink and you're a little slut, don't wonder why that bad things that happened to you happened.

  21. Lady_Says says – reply to this

    21

I drank too much in my day, and it seems to have gotten worse with teens now. 16 year olds male or female shouldn't be getting that drunk, wish I hadn't, but thats where that issue stops. What scares the cr*p out of me are the boys, who were clearly not raised correctly, who seem to think its okay to f*ck an unconscious girl! To do something so sick at a young age, they deserve the heaviest punishment and to carry that shame their whole lives, which are hopefully now very limited in prospects.

  22. 22

Re: pollopicu – Lol, who knew McDonald's hired "chefs", I thought they were technically called "burger-flippers" or some shit. You must be so successful working the lunch shift.
It's *you're (c'mon, you're showing your lack of intelligence, here).
"I bet you think you're special"…you don't know me at all, and that sentence right there is evidence of that.
It's real easy to talk about other's appearances while you hide your own, cupcake.

  23. Lady_Says says – reply to this

    23

Dumb choices like getting drunk, dont deserve rape. Thats what hangovers are for!

  24. 24

Re: Lady_Says – Eh, don't let the idiot troll get to you. You can take one look at any of their comments and glean what kind of person they are, and it's not the kind of person who is reasonable, intelligent, or really, any kind of GOOD person at all. Any assumption they've made about me has been wrong. I'm having fun with it, slow day at work :)

  25. Rach says – reply to this

    25

Re: pollopicu – are you shitting me? a 16 year old can drink and the consequence doesnt have to be that she got raped. Should she probably not have drank so much? YES. But should she have gotten raped by two disgusting individuals? NO. you want to talk about consequences, the boys who raped are the ones who should be dealing with the consequences. shut the fuck up and educate yourself you heartless piece of useless shit

  26. Rach says – reply to this

    26

excuse my rant, but no individual, no matter how scantily dressed or how drunk she gets, should be dragged around town, raped, and then photographed. That is absolutely vile. a 16 year old getting drunk is pretty normal. Its not okay for them to get so drunk that they black out, but I'll bet you anything in the world after everything that happened to her, that girl will not drink like that ever again. Even so, the boys should not be defended in any circumstance. In my opinion any man who is capable of doing such a thing should be locked in jail for the rest of their pathetic life.

  27. 27

Re: Rach – Perhaps not, but shit happens when you're a slut. You're so trashy to condone 16 year old drinking and saying it is normal. Maybe in your family.

  28. Rach says – reply to this

    28

Re: pollopicu – the fact that you just blatantly assumed i'm trashy because I drank when I was 16 just proves my theory of your ignorance :) thanks darlin'

IE: Alcohol use remains extremely widespread among today’s teenagers. Nearly three quarters of students (72%) have consumed alcohol (more than just a few sips) by the end of high school, and more than a third (37%) have done so by eighth grade.

That, my friend, is when a person uses evidence to back up their claims.

  29. Rach says – reply to this

    29

Re: pollopicu – oh and also, just because you drink as a teenager, does not mean you're a slut. You'd know that if you ever interacted with human beings as a teenager or had some semblance of a social life. But now I'm going to be the asshole and assume you're a loser who has nothing better to do than comment on random posts on Perez Hilton. You see, I use my knowledge from life experience, you seem to have none. Sadsies.

Re: Jessicalc – I totally agree with everything you have said! I know also the pain. Thank you for commenting on it so well. Perhaps you have changed the mind of just one ignorant person. My hope is that most people believe as you do and that they are civil, loving, empathetic human beings and not ignorant trolls or worse ignorant "celebrities". It turned my stomach to read what Serena was quoted as saying because she does hold herself up as a woman's advocate. Obviously we misjudged her intellect? She is so wrong.

  34. Tara says – reply to this

    34

She has no reason to apologize and, YES, the girl was lucky! In the state of Ohio, any vaginal penetration without consent is considered rape. The one kid admitted to fingering the girl while she was passed out. That was how she was "raped" and he is now considered a rapist. This girl very easily could have been fu(ked in the most literal way possible by more than one guy so, yeah, she is lucky she only got fingered. I also agree that this never would have happened to her if she hadn't gotten pass-out drunk or, if she insisted on it, at least make sure she had a friend there to watch her back (yet another way the rape could have been worse) both literally and figuretively speaking.

Re: Devvie – thank you for your kind words. I sincerely hope things are looking up for you. Most people don't understand. <3

    36

Re: Tara – even if she didn't get "f*cked" as you say, she was taken advantage of, dragged from party to party, had her clothes taken off, had pictures taken of her while unconscious.. all of this to you seems "lucky?" regardless of whether or had those two boys had sexual intercourse with her, it all was bad. theres no luck in that situation. and to think there was, is ignorant.

  37. 37

Re: pollopicu – Shame on you! Get therapy!

  38. 38

That's why you shouldn't drink at 16. Smaller bodies tend to black out faster.
No one deserves to be violated, but have some COMMON SENSE.

If I walked into a slum in mexico wearing necklaces of gold and diamond earings and said "I don't deserve to be robbed so I shouldn't be robbed." you're an idiot.
If you dress like a skank, drink more than your body can take and then act SURPRISED when something bad happens, you're also an idiot.
Rapes are usually out of our control. She could have chosen not to drink and remained in control. Her choice was to make herself vulnerable, and while those men deserve the punishment, she's not devoid of some of the blame entirely either.

  39. 39

With freedom, comes responsibility. But to all on here blaming the victim, hope this never happens to you or to someone that you care about.

  40. 40

She's a 16 year old girl who shouldn't have been drinking in the first place. If you drink until you pass out you are simply opening yourself up to be a victim of -A CRIME- not just rape, but theft, etc. Should I be able to go out at midnight in a bad neighborhood without the fear of being mugged? Of fucking course. Should a girl be able to get shitfaced without the fear of getting raped? Of course. But that is NOT the world we live in. Stop throwing Personal responsibility out the window.

  41. 41

Re: pollopicu – Sick of those girls? Why is it bothering you that they want to look good, have fun with their friends, and have CONSENSUAL sex with whoever THEY choose?

  42. 42

Re: NookiesWA – I might agree if she were at a party with strangers. But these people were her classmates and friends. Never in a million years would she have suspected they would do this to her. Did you trust your friends and classmates in high school? Let's not forget, she DATED one of these guys before, of course she trusted them!
& Think about it, what kind of guy could sexually touch an unconscious girl? That's sick, even beyond the rape.

    43

Re: Heather – Tell it like it is ! Kudos to you for your response. Serena did make a valid point. It's not like she said it was a good thing to rape, but yeah, why would a 16 year old girl be that drunk knowing being in a situation like that exposes her to possible danger? No one deserves to be raped, and those who rape should be hanged by the b$$$s so they know what it feels like being humiliated. Outside of this, those who think Serena said something bad… She did not!

  44. 44

Re: chillax62 – So, her disagreeing with the boys' punishment isn't something to be upset over? You don't think it's bad to suggest that since the girl drank herself silly, the boys shouldn't be punished? She's an advocate for women for crying out loud!
"Williams says the perpetrators of the crime "did something stupid," and she asks: "Do you think it was fair, what they got?""–CBS News excerpt of the Rolling Stone article.
She says they "did something stupid". NO THEY COMMITTED A CRIME!
