Serena Williams made some shady comments about the Steubenville rape victim last week, comments that she said were mostly untrue and misconstrued by the reporter who had asked her how she felt about such an awful situation.
Since then, she's been on an apology bender — but less for what was said, more for that the reporter got it wrong (which is totally plausible!). EITHER WAY, she has not only visited the rape victim in person, but she's also apologizing to those sucked into the collateral damage… including her biggest opponent, Maria Sharapova!
You see, when the interview was released, Maria was sucked into the whirlwind just because they're fierce opponents, so everyone thought to badger Maria with questions about things now that Serena was in hot water. It makes sense if you want to sensationalize things, but honestly, Maria shouldn't have been bothered!
Maria ACCEPTED her apology… but then turned around and threw some shade later at her own press conference! She said:
"If she wants to talk about something personal, maybe she should talk about her relationship and her boyfriend that was married and is getting a divorce and has kids."
Come on, quit being petty! You're both professionals — ACT LIKE IT!
Listen to Serena talk about how she reached out to Maria (above)!
