Another heartwarming story!
Anthony Nicodemo coaches basketball at Saunders High School in New York, and he recently came out to the world, including his team, which was a big deal for both coach and players!
The coach stood in front of them and said:
“For years and years I’ve told you guys you have to be good, you have to be yourselves, you have to be honest. And I wasn’t honest for the past 35 years in my life. I mean this from the bottom of my heart that this is the toughest thing I’ve ever had to do in my life. But I am a gay high school basketball coach.”
And he was met with nothing but support from his players!
A junior on the team, Joe Nolan said:
“At the end of the day, we have to get in the gym and work on our game. We can’t worry about what people say to us or what people are going to think. We are here to play basketball. If you have love for the game, it doesn’t matter if your coach is gay or not, you’re going to play for the love of the game.”
And his mother Donna Nolan added:
“He’s been with us all for all these years. He’s a great guy, a great coach. He’s like a father and a brother all in one to these kids. What he does outside of school, that’s his business.”
Nicodemo first came out to school administrators in Yonkers where he got lots of support from Superintendent Bernard Pierorazio.
He also calmed any negative nancies, stating:
“There’s not going to be anything in the locker room that changes. There’s nothing there. I’m gay. … These kids are like my sons, these kids are like my brothers. I’m never going to look at them that way.”
Nicodemo is well known in that area for his work with the Lower Hudson Basketball Coaches Association and is a Section 1 rep for the Basketball Coaches Association of New York.
We’re so happy that he felt the strength to come out and be himself, and we’re even prouder of his young players for being so accepting!
Yet another huge step for American men’s sports!
