WFSB 3 Connecticut
Former Olympian Meskerem Legesse was out grabbing a bite with her 2-year-old son in Hamden, Connecticut when she suddenly collapsed and later died as she was being rushed to the hospital.
The Ethiopian distance runner was 8 months pregnant and three weeks away from her expected delivery date at the time, and fortunately doctors were able to rescue her baby.
It's not immediately clear what led to her collapse, but her history of heart problems lead some to believe she went into cardiac arrest. In fact, doctors warned her that there was a high risk of complications when she was pregnant with her second child.
Her close friend Fatima Sene says Meskerem had not been back to Ethiopia in nine years and was hoping to return home to meet with her mother after her baby was born:
"She wanted to see her mother, so I want to get her home. I want to make sure she goes home."
There are currently arrangements being made to have her body sent back to Ethiopia and both or her children are now under their father's care.
We are deeply saddened by this terrible news and send all of our best wishes to Meskerem's family and loved ones at this tough time.
