Amy Stiner and Melissa Moyer faced a terrifying situation when they got lost near the Roque Bluffs State Park hiking trails in Maine, but it looked like they caught a lucky break when they were eventually found and rescued.
However, the ladies made a wrong turn on their way back home that ended up costing them their lives when they accidentally drove into Pond Cove and drowned an hour after they were rescued.
Officials are quick to point out that this isn't the first time visibility has been an issue for the boat launch point that leads into the pond, and there isn't much warning about when and where the road ends. Add in the fact that it was late at night and raining and it's no wonder the women couldn't see where they were going.
Amy and Melissa called police to let them know they had driven into the water, but by the time they arrived the car was completely underwater and about 175 feet from the boat ramp.
The women were found along with their dog inside the vehicle, and to add to the tragedy, Amy was pregnant at the time of her death.
Officials in the area are now hoping to add more visual warnings surrounding the pond to avoid any tragedies like this in the future.
