It's official! The MLB has announced that they will ban Alex Rodriguez for the remainder of the season as well as the entire 2014 season in the biggest suspension in league history!
As we had previously mentioned, A-Rod's punishment has been expected for quite some time now after he was once again linked to the use of performance enhancing drugs and his attempts to cover up his tracks.
"Rodriguez's discipline under the Joint Drug Prevention and Treatment Program is based on his use and possession of numerous forms of prohibited performance-enhancing substances, including Testosterone and human Growth Hormone, over the course of multiple years. Rodriguez's discipline under the Basic Agreement is for attempting to cover-up his violations of the Program by engaging in a course of conduct intended to obstruct and frustrate the Office of the Commissioner's investigation. The suspension, which will become effective on Thursday, August 8th, will cover 211 Championship Season games and any 2013 Postseason games in which Rodriguez otherwise would have been eligible to play."
The news came off the heels of another huge announcement earlier this morning as 12 other major leaguers also faced suspensions, including Texas Rangers outfielder Nelson Cruz, San Diego Padres shortstop Everth Cabrera, and Detroit Tigers shortstop Jhonny Peralta.
Unlike Alex, the other 12 players only face 50 game suspensions and will eligible to return to their teams in the playoffs. None of them are appealing their punishment.
Despite previous reports, A-Rod's suspension will not go into affect until Thursday, however he is eligible to play while he appeals his punishment. He is expected to return to the New York Yankees line-up tonight against the Chicago White Sox.
We're not 100% percent sure how things will play out in the future, but we're willing to make a bold prediction that Alex will be getting a LOT of boos in Chi town tonight!
