wwe glaad show support for darren young after he comes out first openly gay wrestler

Earlier today, we heard the BIG news that Darren Young had come out to become the first openly gay wrestler in WWE history, and since then he's received TONS of support!!

Of course, one of the first organizations to stand behind him was the WWE itself!

They released a statement, saying:

"WWE is proud of Darren Young for being open about his sexuality, and we will continue to support him as a WWE Superstar. Today, in fact, Darren will be participating in one of our Be A Star anti-bullying rallies in Los Angeles to teach children how to create positive environments for everyone regardless of age, race, religion or sexual orientation."

It's so awesome to heard to world of wrestling getting behind their first gay superstar, especially since it has such a big influence on younger men!

It wasn't long before GLAAD stepped into the ring as well to show their full support for Darren's big announcement!

Spokesperson and actor Wilson Cruz said:

"Darren Young's courageous decision to speak out about being gay gives countless young LGBT people, athletes, and fans of the WWE someone to cheer for and look to. With a demonstrated commitment to anti-bullying initiatives and LGBT inclusion, the WWE has paved the way for a gay Superstar to be welcomed and supported."

Last but certainly not least, the You Can Play Project spoke out and said Darren's announcement was a HUGE step forward in thwarting homophobia in sports!

They released a statement saying:

"Darren Young’s coming out is an important step in challenging homophobia in sports. Everyone at You Can Play appreciates his honesty and openness with those in his sport and with his fans, and we share in his happiness. We also appreciate the conversations You Can Play has had with WWE over the past several months. WWE’s commitment to Darren, and to LGBT athletes, staff and fans is exceptional. We applaud the WWE team for that commitment and we look forward to continuing our relationship. It’s an important day for WWE and its fans, for an entire sport and, most importantly, for an honest, happy gay athlete. We offer our sincere congratulations to Darren, and our thanks for his leadership."

The support continues to come in big numbers, and hopefully it wont stop any time soon!

We can't even begin to say how proud and happy we are of Darren, and hopefully athletes like he and Jason Collins will pave the way for more to be open about their sexuality!

He wasn't the first Openly Gay Wrestler, there was a wrestler that came out a long time ago and now he's dead. Look up Chris Kanyon.

To be specific, it should be qualified as the first active wrestler to come out as openly gay while under a WWE contract. There have been other gay (and bi) wrestlers (Pat Patterson, Orlando Jordan, Cris Kanyon, probably others I can't name right now) but none that I know of have publicly come out while being an active member of the roster in the largest wrestling organization in the world. That is the significance/distinction.

The question is, how will his fellow wrestlers respond.

Something tells me that they may have second thoughts about being piledrived by him from now on.
