Valerie Harper will be competing on season 17 of Dancing With The Stars — and she also has terminal brain cancer. A lot of people are wondering why someone with a diagnosis like that would choose such a physical adventure, so Valerie is telling us!
We totally would have accepted 'because I'm a badass' if that's what she wanted to tell us, but she goes much much deeper!
Here's what she said:
"I feel much better. And my brain scans are looking better too. The doctors tell me there's less evidence of cancer, which is very unusual. However, they both say it's not a case of if, but when. And I can live with that.
"When they asked, I thought, 'Why would I say no?' When life asks you to dance, you just have to dance."
What an incredible way of looking at life! She continued:
"I'd been asked to do this before, but I always said no because I started dancing on Broadway at 17. It helped pay for my acting lessons. And I didn't want to appear on the show and fumble because of my diagnosis. [It] might prove inspiring to people to see a 74-year-old woman with terminal cancer dancing."
At this point, the cancer is the least of her worries. Her treatment will be administered right after her performances on Monday nights, and then she'll take a day and a half off and start practice on Wednesday! Her biggest problem is this:
"The other day. I told the wardrobe supervisor, 'Your job is to take six inches off my butt.' "
We can already tell she'll be one of our absolute favorites on the show!
Good luck to her — and good luck to all the other amazeballz contestants (FULL LIST HERE!!)!!
Oh, and ch-ch-check out what Valerie has to say during the cast announcement (below)!
